International Shows

la·zer · vaude·ville (lă´zër vôd´vil) n. a mixing of: blacklight with juggling, lasers with magic, audience participation with acrobatics and slapstick comedy, dance with object manipulation presented in performing arts centers and theatres. An international touring stage show that features Carter Brown, former Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus Clown with hoop rolling and rope-spinning, Cindy Marvell, the first woman ever to win the International Juggling Association Championship, and Nicholas Flair, the most amazing box manipulator combining boxes with acrobatics and shadow-play in the world.

la·zer (lă´zër) n. an attempt by some over-caffinated entertainers to: 1 spell the first word of America's premier New-Vaudeville show 2 a severe misspelling of the same 3 a word that is not even in the dictionary (so much for our great first impression with the educators)

vaude·ville (vôd´vil) n. a combination of: 1 juggling (the art of throwing up) 2 good comedy (something rarely seen on TV.) 3 acrobatics (we've fallen and we can't get up) and 4 magic (did I say a dirty word?)

More about the Company

Lazer Vaudeville has toured its theatrical production in the United States and abroad since 1987. The company was founded by Carter Brown, who developed an interest in vaudeville while studying theatre and art at the University of Vermont. After touring as a clown with Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus and as a solo juggler for the Carden International Circus, where he also designed sound and lights, Brown formed his own theatre company.

Lazer Vaudeville began with a 3-month college and university tour, which quickly grew into a 9-month tour of performing arts centers from Montreal, Canada, to Santiago, Chili. Today the show includes three vaudevillians, a fire-breathing dragon and a wizard who performs magic tricks with laser beams. Carter Brown’s feats include his unique bicycle hoop-rolling act and rope-spinning cowboy. The cast also includes international juggling champion Cindy Marvell and Nicholas Flair, a graduate of the National Circus School in Montreal. The show is set to an original score by composer Jesse Manno, with scenery by Maia Robbins-Zust, tech director at Williams College, and costumes by Broadway designer Jennifer Johanos.

In a typical season, Lazer Vaudeville performs for more than 150,000 people in theatres across America and Canada. The company also produces an Arts-in-Education program designed to teach school children about the history of vaudeville and the science of laser technology. The show is based at the Boulder Circus Center (BCC), co-founded by Brown and Marvell, in Colorado. The BCC offers all-age classes in juggling, aerial, and circus arts. Lazer Vaudeville has performed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and was featured in two P.B.S. specials: “Juggling Work and Family,” by Hedrick Smith Productions (2001), and “Center Stage,” an episode of the series filmed at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX.

In the summer of 2000, Lazer Vaudeville became the first American troupe to perform for the Saudi Arabian public at the Luna Park Theatre in Abha, Asir, which led to a command performance for the Saudi royal family. The following year, the company embarked on an 18-city tour of Taiwan. International performances have included rave reviews and sold-out houses at the Bermuda International Theatre Festival, the Hong Kong International Children's Theatre Festival, the Hirakata Park Theatre in Osaka, Japan, the repeat performances at the Canadian Northern Children's Festival in Prince George, British Columbia, the Singapore Arts Festival (2004), and the Glastonbury Festival for Contemporary Performing Arts in England.
